One of the best things about winter tulip bulb forcing is the absence of annoying pests. The longest, hottest, buggiest days of summer are times when we really crave cool, clean winter growing with NO bug bites!

A pest-free growing experience is probably not on most farmer’s radars. But that is exactly our experience each winter.

When we’re bulb forcing, we don’t have black flies biting us on our necks and behind our ears, like we do every spring here in New England between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. And we don’t have to worry about ticks during our winter season, either. And ticks are a major issue up here. Trust us, we know personally. Our ponds and creeks are frozen, so there are no mosquitoes. And the deer flies that are especially nasty now in August, are no where to be seen.

Opening up our businesses to tulip bulb forcing during the winter gave us a whole new perspective on flower farming. In many ways, winter growing is easier. In many ways, it’s more efficient. And it’s definitely less buggy!

And of course- there are all the great benefits of holding on to our sales outlets year round and establishing our companies as dependable and permanent fixtures of our communities. Seasonal farming is hard financially. And it’s also hard on your customer base. With winter bulb forcing, our businesses remain top of mind, year round. And we’re able to hold on to our shelf space and market contracts throughout the calendar year.
